The South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association recently named the Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes the "2009 Course of the Year"-an honor based not only on the quality of the course, but its contributions to the community.

"This is an incredible honor and a true testament to the impact that the Arthur Hills course has had on the community and the game of golf," said Brad Marra, director of golf at Palmetto Dunes. "The Hills course embodies the values we cherish at Palmetto Dunes, offering year-round championship golf in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry."

According to Marra, the Arthur Hills course supports a variety of national charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club and United Way. In addition, the course recently hosted two dozen Marines from the Parris Island Recruit Depot in appreciation of their service.

The Arthur Hills course was built and designed by master architect, Arthur Hills, in 1986. The renowned course design blends the topography of the Lowcountry, including the natural slopes of rolling dunes and thick stands of palmettos, with the continuous ocean breeze and an intricate lagoon system.

Greenwood Communities & Resorts continually works at maintaining the original design, while incorporating renovations such as new sea walls on four holes and recent updates to the irrigation system. The 18-hole golf course plays 6,651 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72.

The Arthur Hills golf course has previously received awards from Fodor's Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel and Travel + Leisure Golf.
