Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie Island is a 5200-acre residential sea island situated between Hilton Head Island South Carolina and Savannah Georgia. It has a full-time population of about 430, and is home to Haig Point, a 1050 acre private residential community, a publicly accessible resort and a largely undeveloped area referred to as the Historic District.

The island's recorded history traces back to pre revolutionary war times. Pat Conroy’s book, ‘The Water Is Wide’, published in 1972, was set on Daufuskie. The story recounts Mr. Conroy’s experiences while teaching on the island in the 1960’s.

The island is poised for a period of responsible growth, guided by ‘The Daufuskie Island Plan’. This document provides the vision and supporting language for a new, form-based code that will stimulate development within a series of connected communities while preserving the fragile ecosystem that gives the island its unique character. The area offers breath-taking views of Calibogue Sound, expansive marshes bordering the Intracoastal Waterway and is home to artisans producing some of the Lowcountry’s most beautifully crafted artifacts.

Two of the most respected golf courses in the Southeast are located on Daufuskie Island. The Rees Jones course at Haig Point is a private facility that was recently renovated and awarded third-best remodel in the country by Golf Digest. The Jack Nicklaus layout at Melrose is open to the public and features three dramatic finishing holes that border the Calibogue Sound. A 2 ½ mile pristine white sand beach stretches from mid-island to the southern tip and is never crowded, even in the height of the summer season. The modern fire department and EMS are on duty 24/7 and have been lauded for their rapid response and professionalism.

Elementary students are taught at Daufuskie Island School, and students in grades 6 – 12 are transported to Hilton Head Island Middle and High School by the county school ferry.
